Learning the essentials of good painting does not have to be expensive. All good paintings have three things in common and in order of importance and they are, 1) good composition, 2) good contrast and 3) good colour.

This Alla Prima painting was painted using the 3 primaries, plus black & white.

The least expensive way for beginning painters to master colour is to learn to mix colour using the three primary system. These are colors that are made from a single pigment. Using this system, the artist only needs only five tubes of paint and most of those colours are a series four or less in the professional grade. In the student grade, colours made by the same manufacturers cost even less.

The three primary pigments are : PV19 (red), PY3 (yellow) and PB15 (blue). These pigments are the same used in printer's inks and when combined with white and black can replicate pretty much any colour.

The primaries create a triangle which become the base (parent) colours of the wheel. When each parent colour is mixed with its neighbour, they create a secondary colour. Red mixed with yellow makes Orange. Blue mixed with Red makes Violet and Yellow mixed with Blue makes Green. So, Orange, Violet and Green are the secondary colours, creating another triangle on the wheel.

To finalize the wheel, the primaries are again mixed with their new nerighbouring secondaries. This new mixing creates six more colours on the wheel called tertiary colours and complete the wheel. Red mixed with Orange makes the tertiary Red-Orange and Red mixed with Violet makes the tertiary Red-Violet. Yellow mixed with Orange makes the tertiary Yellow-Orange and Yellow mixed with Green makes the tertiary Yellow-Green. Blue mixed with Green makes the tertiary Blue-Green and Blue mixed with Violet makes the tertiary Blue-Violet.

Now the wheel is complete.

Which now brings us to complementary colours. Complementary colours are opposites and opposites create contrast, just as light against dark create contrast, but more about that later.

Simply put, complementary colours are located directly across from one another on the colourwheel. For example, Primary Red is directly across the wheel from the secondary Green. This makes them complements (opposites). The Primary Red was not a parent to the secondary green and therefore unrelated. The same is true for Yellow and Violet and accordingly, Blue and Orange. The same is true for the tertiary colours. Red-Violet is directly across the wheel from yellow-green and so on.

Mixing complements neutralize. Therefore, a complementary can be used to mute its opposite. Red mixed with Green can create varying degrees of brown. The same is true when mixing the other two primaries with their complementary secondary.

COLOUR HARMONY

On the colourwheel there exists colour groups (also known as families). These groups are based on the parent primaries. So, there is The Red Group, The Blue Group and The Yellow Group. Colour Harmony is created when one group dominates.

The Red Group consists of all the colours on the wheel that include the Red parent. Red, Red-Orange, Orange, Yellow-Orange, Red- Violet, Violet and Blue-Violet. The complements for this group are any from the green secondary group (Green, Yellow-Green and Blue-Green).

The Blue Group

Red-Violet, Violet, Blue-Violet, blue, Blue-Green, Green and Yellow-Green. Their compliments: Red-Orange, Orange, and Yellow-Orange.

The Yellow Group

Red-Orange, Orange, Yellow-Orange, Yellow, Yellow-Green, Green and Blue-Green. Their complements: Red-Violet, Violet and Blue-Violet.

Complements are used to neutralize; white to tint (lighten), black to shade (darken).

The primary colours are unrelated and therefore can only exist harmoniously with colours that are in their own group or family. Red can only harmonize with colours that contain red, yellow only with colours that contain yellow and blue with colours that contain blue. So, a painting that has colour harmony is one that has a dominant primary group. Good paintings have one or more of three dominant ingredients: Dominant primary group, dominant temperature (warm or cool) and dominant value (dark, light or middle). Contrast is achieved when a dominant ingredient is put next to its opposite. In painting, areas of contrast become focal points, or accents, and are useful in guiding the observer's eye through the painting. So, a dominant colour con be accented by it's complement, a dark painting can have light accents (and vise versa) and a warm painting can have cool accents (and vice versa).

MIXING EARTHTONES

It is possible to also mix earthtones using just the primaries:

DAYLIGHT

Here, the primary yellow group is used as the dominant group, and green as the dominant colour. The colours used are from the violet complement group to mute and red-violets are used as accents. The area of most contrast in value is the house which becomes the focal point in the painting.

NOCTURNAL

Here, the primary blue group have been used and are muted with the blue-violets and blue-greens with orange. The complementary yellow orange is used to create a high contrast, light against dark, focal point. Again, it is the house.

What you will need:

• 90gsm Tracing Paper
• A Soft Graphite Stick or similar.
• Fast Evaporating Solvent

1. Grab a piece of 90gsm tracing paper (also called vellum).

2. Using a 6B or (or softer) Graphite Stick scribble over the entire side of the sheet.

3. With Fuelite, or another solvent that dries rapidly, "dissolve" the graphite.

4. Make sure you cover the entire sheet.

What to look for when purchasing a brush for oils or acrylics.

The truth is, most artist brushes are mass produced in the same manufacturing plants to keep the costs down. Until the Industrial Revolution was in full swing and the trade of new materials were available, the Old Masters painted strictly with round brushes handmade by themselves or their apprentices using local materials. Now mass production enables some Companies to have their branded handle put in the same ferrule as their competitors. The country of origin can be found either on the handle itself or on the barcoded sticker usually found at the bottom of the handle. A lot of brushes are mass produced in the Dominican Republic or Sri Lanka. The three examples below are examples of excellent quality synthetic brushes and the brush made in spain, was entirely made by hand, in-house.

At the moment there is no International Standard for artist's brushes. This is why you'll find that a number 4 in one brand may look like a number 8 in another. Another drawback to not having a "standardization" means that any manufacturer is allowed to say their product is of "artist quality". They can also be ambiguous as to the quality of the hair in the brush. Brush hair and synthetic filaments vary greatly in grades and price. Natural hair should be flagged at the tip, which means each hair should have a 'split-end'. Expensive natural hair brushes should never be cut at the tip; the trimming should all be done at the root. Quite often there will be more hair beneath the ferrule than on the outside. The two brushes below are examples of the best you can buy. The bristles and filaments are of the best quality. They are secure. The handles are protected and the ferrules are tightly crimped.

There is currently a shortage of quality natural hair, hence the hefty price for many quality brushes. This is also why you'll never find a fine quality brush at a 2$ Shop. The cheap brushes are usually cut along the top of the bristle and they lose their flagged tip. Good quality Artist's brushes also have brass or copper ferrules that are nickel or gold plated. These ferrules are finely crimped and do not have a seam. Good handles should be made from hardwood and be well lacquered with several coats.

An example of a lower cost brush that has inferior qualities is this one below. Not only does it not have any paint or lacquer to protect the handle from swelling, it is poorly crimped so the water will easily crawl up the ferrule reaching the filament, causing it to fall out.

All brushes used for acrylic and oils eventually wear down and have to be replaced. The amount of time a brush lasts depends a lot on how vigorously you paint or how diligent you are with the cleaning. Don't throw away your warn out brushes though because often they can be used for scumbling; even the inexpensive Chinese brushes, which we call "suicide brushes" are useful for some techniques. Acrylic paint is brutal on all brushes, but your brushes will last longer if you wet the brush first before loading it. Never clean your oil brushes with linseed oil as this is a drying oil and will eventually clog the ferrule. Never let your acrylic paint get so deep into the ferrule that it can't be removed. Both will dry and spread the hairs on the brush leaving a gap right in the middle of the hair or filament.

Below is an example of a brush that has dried acrylic down in the ferrule.

The brush below is a another good example of what will happen. A customer brought this brush into our shop (purchased somewhere else!) to ask, why it started to lose the bristles. Notice the glue at the end of the bristles and how little glue there really is to keep the bristles in tact. Once the un-lacquered handle came in contact with water, the brush was history.

The two examples of brushes down below are similar in style and priced comparatively. The brush on the left however, has a highly lacquered handle and although you can't see from the outside, the hair runs half-way down the ferrule with a greater amount of glue. Also notice the sizing difference...not much although one is a size 2 and the other a 14.

Both synthetic and bristle brushes can be used for painting with either oil or acrylic paints. However, I used the brush down below only 4 times to acrylic prime my boards for the workshop, each time cleaning it well when I finished. It didn't take long for the ferrule to start discoloring the handle and the bristles are already starting to fall out. This brush retails for just under $25.00. I would have been better off using a cheaper Chinese brush instead of paying for a brush made in Germany.

Remember that anything goes! (see blow) And, some of the most amazing paintings ever created were painted with sticks, feathers, fingers, make-shift brushes and now, on a computer tablet! And finally, be weary of those "demos" where retailers are brand specific. This is usually because they have a vested interest in certain brands. Ask other artist's what they use to get certain effects, read unbiased reviews and remember that every brush has a purpose.

Just for fun we had our Stig paint with his fingers in our studio. He painted for about an hour and a half. Below are the results and what we think is a good example of the importance of form and color no matter what the tool. Here is what le Stig said:

Mixing Ratios

As little as 10% MM31 Open Medium to the paint, will lengthen the working time, allowing satisfying, smooth blends. By choosing to use smaller amounts of medium, the blending time is increased, but drying time is not drastically increased. However, a larger amount of Open Medium will dramatically increase the working time of the paint. The maximum retardation of drying time is reached with an equal mixture of paint to medium. Beyond this point, any further additions of MM31 Open Medium will result in minimal increases of drying time but may reduce waterfastness of the dried paint. However larger proportions (more medium than paint) will give transparency and will aid effective layering. As well as allowing more time to blend on the surface, paint mixed with MM31 Open Medium will stay fresh on the palette for several hours, depending both on the weather conditions and the quantity of MM31 Open Medium used. Easy to use, MM31 Open Medium will allow the reworking of areas of a painting in a way not previously possible.The gel-like consistency of MM31 Open Medium allows it to remain in place on the palette, therefore it is suitable to be brush-mixed while painting, as well as to be pre-mixed on the palette.

Why Natural Is Better

Natural Hair contains microscopic ridges along its length, which helps to hold a greater amount of watercolour paint. The more expensive hair types also have a 'spring' that returns the brush to its natural shape and in the round versions, maintain a superb point for years.

A Natural Hair Brush will always give you better results because it enables you to lay down the pigment and leave it; making an economic brushstroke -meaning the fewer brushstrokes you make, the fresher the painting.

If you do choose a synthetic brush, choose a size that is one or two sizes larger than you would with a sable (if you expect your brush to hold the same amount of paint as a natural hair brush).

The only synthetic brushes that we recommend for watercolour painting are the Escoda Perla and the new Princeton Neptune brushes. The Perla has a large proportion of filament for their size and are handcrafted with a unique tapered end which enables the artist to create the finest point. The Neptune brush simulates a squirrel brush with incredible water/pigment-holding capabilities.

As a middle of the road brush, there are synthetic/sable mixed brush available, like the Robert Simmons Sapphire Brush.

Brush Types.

Rounds

The Round Brush is the most common choice with watercolour artists.

All good quality round watercolor brushes will have a seamless nickel coated brass, or even gold, ferrule that is firmly secured. Escoda brushes are unique in that they have a triple crimp. This keeps the brush head straight and prevents water penetrating the ferrule.

The hairs on a round brush should have a good belly at their widest part for holding a lot of paint, which is then released evenly.

All quality brushes are made with fully sealed handles. The best handles are lacquered to prevent moisture from penetrating the wood, which will eventually compromise the integrity of the brush.

In addition, the brush handle should feel well balanced in the hand.

Riggers & Scripts

A Rigger is also a round brush but has long, fine hairs that are perfect for painting very thin lines.

Flats

As the name implies, the hairs are laid out in a flat formation, with a straight end to the filament. This allows you to paint a square edged mark like windows and doors, for example. They come to a sharp chisel edge when charged with paint and if used vertically, theyre ideal for making thin, straight lines.

Hake

The Hake is usually made of goat-hair, which is not as soft as most of the other natural hairs, but more flexible than the hog hair brushes used for oil and acrylic painting. Its also good for painting in large areas such as skies.Hakes usually have a plain, flat wooden or bamboo handle and are a lot bigger than the normal flat watercolour brush.After a little practice, this brush becomes invaluable as an all-purpose painting tool and it actually encourages a loose painting style.

Mops & Quills

A mop is a round, full version of the wash brush, made of soft, absorbent hair or filament. It is useful for laying in large areas of water or colour; for wetting the surface and for absorbing excess media. A versatile mop is the Winsor & Newton Pure Squirrel Brush, as it also comes to a point.

Oval Mops

The oval wash has rounded hairs, flat ferrules, and produces a soft edge, with little or no point. A wash brush is useful for laying in large areas of water or color, for wetting the surface and for absorbing excess media.

Mottler & Wash

The Mottler is used for large, flat washes; for laying down large amounts of pigment with one easy stroke.

Dagger

The dagger makes a thick and thin line as well as "teardrop" shapes ideal for painting flower petals.

Not All Sable Is Created Equal

Like all natural products, there are different varieties, qualities and grades. This is also true in the hair used for the watercolour brush. Try to avoid cheap Sable (which sometimes isnt Sable at all) from places like China. The highest grade Sable is called Kolinsky, and the highest grade Kolinsky is called, "Tajmir". Tajmir Sable comes from Northern Siberia, where the lowest temperatures enable the animal to grow a longer, fuller coat. The Escoda 1212 Brush for example, is made of Tajmir Sable and they only use the hair from the male'swinter tail.

The highest quality brushes are made with the finest Sable and are assembled by artisan hands, who carefully build the brush so that each and every hair follows its natural curve, inward. Escoda have a secret curing process which increases spring and resilience, leaving the brush more responsive, a sharper point, crisper edges and the ability to always return to its original shape.

Book Board is an inexpensive, acid-free, archival board that can be used as a substrate for painting or drawing or any mixed-media project.

What you will need:

• A Piece of Book Board
• Shellac
• Turpenoid Natural
• Art Spectrum Brush & Hand Cleaner

Seal the book board with a coat of shellac. You may need two or three coats depending on how much the shellac has been diluted.

The colors used on this particular portrait were: Titanium White, Naples Yellow, Yellow Ochre, Cadmium Red Light, Alizarin, Burnt Sienna, Dioxazine Purple and Phthalo Blue.

A sketch was laid down, dry-brushing with burnt sienna.

If you wish to paint without the use of any solvents, Turpenoid Natural can be used as a medium. Turpenoid is water soluble so clean-up can be done with soap and water. Here, I used the Archival Flow Gel Medium because I like the fast drying properties. I then cleaned my brushes without using any solvents; only the Art Spectrum Brush & Hand Cleaner or Turpenoid Natural.

Hosho paper is a machine-made, high grade Kozo paper well suited for sumi painting and brush calligraphy. Each pad contains 48 sheets of white Hosho paper.

Here are the materials I'll be using for my painting of Daniel:Crescent Watercolor Board, an assortment of Liquitex and Matisse Acrylics, which are layed out on an Enamel Butcher Tray on folded, wet paper towels.

Here I've laid in a background acrylic wash of phthalo green, red oxide and burnt sienna, using a Hake brush.

Using reference, I start to pick out the negative shapes behind the large Macrocarpa Tree.

I'm working with the negative shapes, using red-orange colors to establish a complimentary color scheme.

Here, I'm starting to define the light areas on Daniel with a dry-brush technique. I'm using a variety of DAS Series 9000 brushes. This is a hard wearing synthetic bristle brush.

This is the finished painting after I have glazed the entire painting with Liquitex Yellow Orange Azo, to enhance the color harmony.

Liquid Pencil is an innovative new product that allows you to create authentic graphite pencil effects and pencil sketches using a liquid. Vista Patinas are traditional patinas because they contain chemicals which react with the metal. They contain a base blend of chemicals that produce a beautiful green on bronze, brass, and cooper, or on iron & steel they will create exquisite rust. Added to this traditional base solution are different colored oxides, which will blen with the chemical reaction to form a marbled patina. For example, using the Vista Blackk on bronze would produce a green and black patina - on iron there would be rust and black together. These patinas are not recommended for aluminum. The color will vary with different metals.

Traditional Patinas are mixtures of chemicals that react with the metals to create different colors on the surface. Many of the patinas are variations of old formulas that have been used for years, however, these have been mixed for your convenience. All of these patinas contain acids - most cause rust on iron and steel. Traditional Patinas will vary in color on different metals, there can be a change in color due to humidity, temperature, and the surface preparation, also. 250ml ]]>

Luey is a recurring character from LA-based artist Bob Dob. Born and raised in Hermosa Beach, CA, Bob Dob cultivated a taste for adolescent unrest early on, first expressing his talent as guitarist for the punk band Lunacy. Transmutation from music to art was a natural progression for him and he currently shows his works in galleries throughout the U.S. Luey is his first vinyl figure.
