Princeton Art & Brush Co.

Nearly 20 years ago, Howard Kaufman began a small brush business very near his home in Princeton, New Jersey. As President of one of the world’s largest and best known art supply manufacturers, Howard had gained a vast knowledge of brush-making and an understanding of the needs and desires of painters. He believed that by focusing on innovation and value, he would always have an appreciative audience for his products. Enter Naohide Takamoto, third-generation of Japan’s revered Takamoto brush-making family. In fact, you may be interested to learn that Taklon hair was named for its creator – Takamoto. The two worked together tirelessly to develop the best synthetic sable. Often copied, but never equaled, Princeton’s series 4050 faux-sable remains a flagship product. Artists love this high quality brush that is a true alternative to much more expensive natural hair brushes. In the years since, Princeton has brought many unique products to artists. Princeton has led the market in new synthetic hair technologies and handle finishes. They have been at the lead in creating non-toxic coatings for handles, and the responsible sourcing of sustainable wood for our handles. Today, Princeton Artist Brush Co. is one of the largest brush-makers in North America. Since their start in 1992, artist brushes have been the sole focus of Princeton. Other brush companies make paint, paper, canvas, pastels and easels. Princeton makes one thing: the best quality, most fairly priced artist brushes available today. Princeton will continue to innovate and maintain our obsession with value. They encourage you to compare their brushes with other brands. Their mission is to always deliver more brush for your money. It’s what they call “Real Value."

  • Refine Natural Bristle Oil & Acrylic Brushes $12.24 - $122.20

Princeton’s flagship line of interlocked bristle, Refine™ starts with premium quality Chungking bristle and adds the panache of hand-formed interlock construction. The natural taper and curve of the bristle is expertly arranged within the hair tuft to form crisp edges and resilient points. Interlocked brushes hold their form in heavy use while other non-interlocked bristle can look more deranged than arranged. The true bounty of Refine™ is in its shape and size offering. Unique shapes like short filberts , extreme egberts, and sharp angle shaders usually only appear in much more expensive European ranges.

  • Neptune Synthetic Squirrel Brushes $10.80 - $98.40

Princeton has done it again. Almost 20 years ago, Princeton gave artists a synthetic version of sable that was almost the equal of fine Kolinsky and is still the standard for performance for its rivals. "When we set out to create a synthetic version of squirrel we developed a brush that may actually outperform the natural version. Neptune is our thirstiest brush ever delivering oceans of color to the sheet. Experts in natural hair have been incredulous that this is actually synthetic. We are proud to offer Neptune in a beautiful range of shapes including mottlers and quills. The beautiful sea glass handles of our aquarelle brushes are the signature of the line."
