Sculpting the Full Figure with Javier Murcia

20 - 22 March, 2020 (3 days)

9am - 5pm (one hour lunch)

Medium: Clay

Level: Intermediate - Advanced

In this 3 day intensive workshop, Javier will guide you through sculpting a full figure from a live model. He will discuss and demonstrate the planes and forms of the figure, how to follow the dynamic lines in the natural postures of the body while also balancing the weight. He will help you to read through the beautiful engineering of the human anatomy landscape. He will also be working on a figure beside you, so you can use his as an example.

You will be working on a 400mm high piece in wet clay using your hands and some tools.

You do not need to be highly experienced; this is also a good opportunity for you to just get started in figure sculpting.

You will need your own tools and 10kgs of clay

Please make your booking on our Atelier Website.

About the Instructor

Javier Murcia, a Spanish sculptor born in 1981, studied fine arts at the University of La Laguna in the Canary Islands. He combined these studies with the study of anatomy at the Faculty of Medicine of the same university to develop full command of this beautiful subject that he is so passionate about.

In 2010, he travelled to Copenhagen where he lived for almost two years. During that time, he had the opportunity to collaborate with artists Christian Lemmerz and Michael Kvium creating works for private art collections. One of the works completed is a monumental sculpture of Medusa commissioned by the Kristiansen family, the founders of LEGO.

At the beginning of 2013, Javier moved to New Zealand where he started to create his own work and, importantly, met Sir Richard Taylor. Since their encounter, Sir Richard has become a firm supporter and has acquired a significant number of artworks produced since Javier's arrival in New Zealand.

In 2015, the first of Javier's Oxidations was created, a series of works whose production continued until 2018. More than 300 pieces have been completed and sold in New Zealand, the United States and Europe.
