Giclee Printmaking

Giclee (pronounced zhee-CLAY) is a high resolution, high-quality reproduction individually printed on a special, large format printer using inkjet technology that is far more sophisticated than a desktop printer.

Giclees use six colours; light cyan, cyan, light magenta, magenta, yellow and black (sometimes two blacks). The pigments are fade resistant and fine, and there are numerous replaceable print heads resulting in a wider colour range. The ink is sprayed onto the page, actually mixing the colour on the page to create truer shades and hues.

Giclees were originally developed as a proofing system for traditional lithographic printing presses, but it soon became apparent that the presses were having a hard time delivering the quality and brilliant colour of the giclee proofs. Giclees evolved into the preferred art reproduction process, worldwide. They are coveted by collectors for their fidelity and quality, and desired by galleries and artists alike because they don't have to be produced in huge quantities with a large capital or storage problem.

Giclees are produced directly from your digital file or a transparency, depending on the size of the artwork. As an additional service, we can have your artwork professionally photographed and made into a digital file or have a transparency made and scanned. If you provide us with the original artwork, we can also provide a colour matching service. These services are all done at an additional cost.

When we provide you with your giclee, we will delete the artwork from our files and provide you with a disc of your scanned artwork so that you have complete control over your copyright.
