Escoda

In the northeast of the Iberian Peninsula, 25km outside Barcelona, you will find Sabadell. In 1933 in this city of around 200.000 inhabitants, the first artist brush factory in Spain was born. From that date until now quite possibly 75.000.000 brushes have been manufactured, all handmade and following deep-rooted traditional procedures. Towards the end of 1933 Josep Escoda Roig founded a small family company. His two sons extended it and now the third generation is ensuring its continuity. This long trajectory now forms part of the history, and the speciality the permanent pride of one family. Escoda was the first brush manufacturer in Europe to be awarded the ISO UNE-ISO 9001/100 Quality Certificate. This prestigious recognition is the result of devotion in line with continuous improvement in the design and quality of its brushes. The tenacity of 75 years devoted to a unique and increasingly specific activity enables Escoda to compare the writer’s quill or the sculptor’s chisel to the seismograph and a brush, as they all transmit the sensitivity of the artist, converting his or her inspiration into art. There are no machines to make quality artist brushes. Escoda's machines are their hands, nails, fingertips, touch, intuition and the innate skill of every operator with their many years of practice and experience. All these qualities combine to perform the miracle of creating a brush.

  • Escoda Primera

Escoda Primera Teijin fiber is a synthetic with thicker and stiffer fibers for work with heavier bodied paints. It's a great brush for painters using gouache, egg tempera, and even acrylic paints. The Teijin fiber is maroon colored and holds its shape and edge extremely well even with thicker paints. It works well in watercolor for edge and snap, but holds less water. The short brown lacquered wood handle is triple crimped to the nickel-plated brass ferrule.

  • Escoda Opera Takatsu$16.50-$54.40

Escoda Takatsu is a synthetic filament that has a feel that is almost identical to traditional sable, but much more robust. The Escoda curing process creates a brush head that consistently snaps back to its original shape. The long, red-lacquered wood handle is triple crimped to the nickel-plated brass ferrule.
